Libertarian Capitalism: An Ideology Of Hypocrisy
I still don’t know what goes on in their minds
Libertarian capitalism is a widespread ideology, particularly in the United States. The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the entire country. However, the beliefs of libertarians can vary wildly, from simply a smaller government and more free market in the existing system, to a world run entirely by corporations with no central government, and many in between. This article will mainly be covering the latter, as the former have very little difference from the average Republican, and that is a story for another time.
These libertarians in particular strictly follow the economic systems described by Ayn Rand. They want to create a society with no central government, but with a completely free market. They claim that this will create a meritocracy, where everybody is truly equal, and is only hindered by not seizing opportunity.
This, as you may expect, would cause several problems. It is essentially impossible to have both a free market and no government. At that point, the largest corporations essentially become their own governments, and the system is recreated. Worse still, corporate governments wouldn’t have any need to be democratic at all. This would create corporate monarchies, which is very much not free. Have we learned nothing from the banana republics and East India Company?
That’s not to mention that the idea of a meritocratic society is inherently bad. If somebody has a disability, they would be put at an inherent disadvantage, and would be unable to live a good life, if any at all. Meritocracy is essentially just a big middle finger to the neurodivergent and physiodivergent, and it does not belong anywhere outside of very specific professions (such as much of the medical field.)
In conclusion, for freedom to be truly achieved, capitalism must go. Any attempt to create freedom through capitalism will end poorly, as it always has, and always will, because capitalism is the largest hierarchy of all. Also, don’t do meritocracy, kids.
